2. System Understanding

3. Symptom Diagnosis (Ordered by Frequency)
Symptom 1: Only HIGH Speed Works (60% of cases)
Cause: Blower motor resistor failed — one or more coils burned open.
Quick test: Disconnect the battery, unplug the resistor, and check resistance between the terminals. You should see 1–5 ohms across each coil. If you see infinite resistance (OL), that coil is burnt.
Fix: Replace resistor. Part cost: $25–60 for OEM or aftermarket (Denso or Four Seasons are solid). Labor: 30–45 minutes.
Symptom 2: Intermittent Speeds, Then Only HIGH (15% of cases)
Cause: Loose connector or corroded terminals on the resistor — heat cycles cause the plastic connector to melt slightly, breaking contact.
Test: Inspect the connector for blackened or melted plastic. If present, replace both the resistor and the pigtail connector ($15–20).
Symptom 3: Only HIGH + Burning Smell (10% of cases)
Cause: Blower motor drawing excessive current (worn bearings or debris in the cage), which overheats the resistor.
Test: Spin the blower wheel by hand — if it’s stiff or grinding, replace the blower motor ($80–120) along with the resistor. I’ve seen this combo fail on 2016–2017 Police Responders with high idle hours.
Symptom 4: Only HIGH + No Airflow Change (10% of cases)

Test: With the key on, measure voltage at the resistor connector while switching speeds. You should see 12V on low, ~8V on medium-low, ~5V on medium. If voltage doesn’t change, the switch/module is bad.

Cause: Short in the blower motor wiring or the motor itself. This is the hardest case — check the wiring harness where it passes through the firewall for chafing.

- Clean the cabin air filter every 15,000 miles — a clogged filter restricts airflow and increases blower load, shortening resistor life.

Q: Can I drive with only high speed working?
