2. System Understanding

Your Mirai’s blower motor is a simple DC motor. Speeds are controlled by a blower resistor module (or a power transistor on some models). The resistor drops voltage for low/medium speeds. On HIGH, the resistor is bypassed entirely – full battery voltage goes straight to the motor. That’s why high always works when everything else fails.

Failure points: The resistor’s internal coils overheat and crack. In my experience, these fail every 5–7 years depending on how often you run the fan on medium speed. Toyota’s resistor modules are better than most, but they’re not immune.

3. Symptom Diagnosis (By Frequency)

Symptom 1: Only HIGH works (60% of cases)

Cause: Blower resistor failure. This is your prime suspect.

Quick test: Locate the resistor (usually behind the glovebox, near the blower motor). Unplug it. Check resistance between the connector pins – you should see a few ohms on each winding. If any pin reads infinite resistance, the resistor is dead.

Cost: $25–$60 for the part. Time: 30–45 minutes.

Symptom 2: Only HIGH, plus intermittent fan speed changes (15%)

Cause: Corroded connector or a cracked solder joint on the resistor board. I’ve seen this on 2021+ Mirais where the connector sits close to the firewall and picks up moisture.

Fix: Clean contacts with electrical contact cleaner, re-seat the connector. If that doesn’t work, replace the resistor.

Symptom 3: Only HIGH, and fan is noisy on low (10%)

Cause: The blower motor itself is drawing too much current due to worn brushes, which overloads the resistor. The resistor dies first, but the motor is the root cause.

Test: Measure current draw with an amp clamp – a healthy blower motor draws 5–8 amps. If it’s pulling 12+ amps, replace the motor (about $80–$120) and the resistor.

Symptom 4: Only HIGH, but blower stops randomly (10%)

Cause: Failing blower motor relay or a bad ground. Check the relay first – swap it with the horn relay (same part number) to test.

Symptom 5: Only HIGH, and it only works when the car is cold (5%)

Cause: Thermal expansion in a cracked solder joint on the resistor board. When it heats up, the connection opens. This is rare but I’ve seen it on a 2020 Mirai last year.

4. Decision Tree

Fan blows on HIGH?
  → YES → Does it blow on any other speed?
      → YES → Not a resistor issue. Check blower switch and wiring.

5. Repair vs Replace

Repairable: If it’s just the resistor, clean the connector and replace the module. That’s it. No need to touch the motor.

Replace: If the blower motor is drawing high current, replace it. Don’t just swap the resistor again – it’ll fail again within 6 months.

Cost comparison: DIY resistor replacement: $25–$60 parts, 45 minutes of your time. Shop price: $180–$250. DIY motor replacement: $80–$120 parts, 1–2 hours. Shop: $350–$450.

6. Prevention

What kills resistors: Running the fan on medium speed for hours on end (like on road trips). The resistor dissipates heat continuously. Also, dusty cabin air filters cause the motor to work harder, increasing current and heat.

Maintenance schedule: Replace your cabin air filter every 12 months or 12,000 miles (I recommend the Toyota OEM filter, about $25). Check the blower motor inlet for leaves/debris each spring.

Warning signs: If you notice the fan speed drops briefly on medium then recovers, that’s the resistor starting to fail. Catch it early and you’ll save yourself a tow.

Q: Can I bypass the resistor and just run the fan on high all the time?
